A smart plug sounds like the simplest gadget in the house: plug it in, plug a lamp into it, and turn the lamp on from your phone. The catch is compatibility. A plug that only talks to Alexa is no help if your family lives in Apple Home, and a plug that needs a special network hub is overkill if all you want is a coffee-maker timer. Most of the frustration comes from buying the wrong type, not the wrong brand.
That’s the lens I used here.

This article is NOT for you if…
You need an outdoor plug, a smart power strip, or an in-wall outlet. Those are different products with different safety limits. This roundup is about single indoor plugs for lamps, fans, coffee makers, and holiday lights, not heavy appliances that run near a plug’s maximum load.
How I picked these
1. Ecosystem fit. The first question is which voice assistant and app you use. I covered Alexa-only, Alexa plus Google, and Matter plugs that work with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings.
2. Setup and reliability. Some plugs need nothing but Wi-Fi, while others need a hub or a Thread border router. I noted what each plug requires so you don’t find out after you’ve bought it.
3. Extras and value. Energy monitoring is the most useful extra, and price per plug adds up fast in a multi-pack. I also looked at certifications and warranties where the listing states them.
Quick Comparison
| Model | Works With | Energy Monitoring | Price Tier | Standout Feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kasa Matter Plug KP125M (2-Pack) | Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings (Matter) | Yes | Mid | Matter plus energy monitoring in a slim body |
| Eve Energy (Matter) | Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings (Thread) | Yes | Higher | Thread, with no cloud account required |
| Amazon Smart Plug (2-Pack) | Alexa only | No | Mid | The simplest Alexa setup |
| Wyze Plug (2-Pack) | Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT | No | Low | Low price, no hub needed |
| Linkind Matter Plug | Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings (Matter) | No | Lowest per plug | The cheapest way into Matter |
1. Kasa Matter Smart Plug KP125M — Best Overall
The KP125M is the plug most reviewers land on, and for good reason. It’s Matter-certified, so it works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings, and it tracks real-time and historical energy use in the Kasa app. The body is slim enough that two can sit in the same outlet, it’s rated for 15 amps and 1,800 watts, and Kasa backs it with a two-year limited warranty. Engadget’s testers named it the best Matter plug they tried, and it doesn’t need a Thread border router.
Pros:
- Matter certification means one plug works across all four major smart home platforms
- Energy monitoring shows real-time and historical power use in the app
- Compact, UL-certified, flame-retardant body leaves the second outlet free
Cons:
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and Matter setup needs a compatible Matter controller
- Engadget found HomeKit connectivity spotty without a HomePod
Best for: Most households, especially if you use more than one voice assistant.

2. Eve Energy (Matter) — Best for Apple Home and Privacy
Eve Energy takes a different route: it runs Matter over Thread, a low-power mesh network, instead of Wi-Fi. That makes it fast and independent of the cloud, and Eve says there’s no account registration required. It also works as a power meter, and independent testers found its readings slightly more accurate at low loads than other plugs. The trade-off is that you need a Thread border router, such as a HomePod, Apple TV 4K, or a recent Echo or Nest Hub.
Pros:
- Thread connection is fast and doesn’t rely on your Wi-Fi or a cloud account
- Built-in energy monitoring with accurate readings at low loads
- Works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings through Matter
Cons:
- Requires a Thread border router, which is a hub-style device you may not own
Best for: Apple Home users who care about privacy and already have a HomePod or Apple TV.

3. Amazon Smart Plug (2-Pack) — Best for Alexa Households
If your home runs on Echo speakers, this is the least fussy plug you can buy. Setup takes a couple of minutes in the Alexa app, no hub is required, and the plug reconnects to Alexa by itself after a power or Wi-Fi outage. It also has a compact design that keeps the second outlet free. The limitation is that it works exclusively with Alexa, so it won’t join Google or Apple routines.
Pros:
- Simple setup through the Alexa app, with no hub
- Reconnects automatically after power or Wi-Fi outages
- Compact design leaves the neighboring outlet usable
Cons:
- Works only with Alexa, not Google Home or Apple Home
- No energy monitoring
Best for: Households that already use Echo devices and want the easiest setup.

4. Wyze Plug (2-Pack) — Best Budget Pick for Alexa and Google
The Wyze Plug is a no-frills Wi-Fi plug that works with both Alexa and Google Assistant, plus IFTTT for custom automations. It needs no hub, handles up to 15 amps, and adds schedules and a vacation mode in the Wyze app. It’s indoor-only and doesn’t support Apple Home or Matter.
Pros:
- Works with both Alexa and Google Assistant, with IFTTT support
- No hub required, and 15 amp capacity
- Schedules and a vacation mode in the Wyze app
Cons:
- No Apple Home or Matter support
- No energy monitoring, and it’s for indoor use only
Best for: Alexa or Google households that want a simple, inexpensive plug.

5. Linkind Matter Smart Plug — Cheapest Matter Plug
Linkind is the budget way into Matter. Each plug is rated for 15 amps and 1,800 watts and carries ETL certification, with timers and schedules in the app. It’s a newer name than Kasa or Eve, so there’s less long-term track record, and it doesn’t offer energy monitoring.
Pros:
- Works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings
- 15 amp, 1,800 watt rating with ETL certification and timer scheduling
Cons:
- No energy monitoring
- Less track record than Kasa or Eve, and it needs a Matter controller to set up
Best for: People who want several Matter plugs across the house without spending much.

Before you order: three things to check
- Match the plug to your ecosystem. Alexa-only plugs won’t work with Apple Home, Matter plugs work across platforms but usually need a Matter controller to set up, and Thread plugs need a Thread border router.
- Check your Wi-Fi and your load. Most of these plugs connect only to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so make sure your router broadcasts it. Stay below each plug’s 15 amp, 1,800 watt rating.
- Know the brand context. TP-Link, which owns Kasa and Tapo, has faced US government scrutiny. In the mid-2026 reporting I found, the proposed Commerce action was aimed at routers rather than smart home gear and hadn’t been finalized. If that matters to you, Eve, Amazon, Wyze, and Linkind are alternatives.
